A BROKEN NEGOTIATIONS OF A MARRIAGE ( A REAL STORY)

A broken negotiations of a marriage (A Real story)

I was working in the neighbouring state as an officer in the Engineering department.
My senior had two beautiful daughters and one handicappped son. His elder daughter was a first class graduate and she did not conitue her studies for reasons that was not known to me. I had seen that girl when I visited their residence which was in a district head quarters. I was posted in the taluk head quarters.
When I had to go on leave the senior officer requested me to visit a gentleman who is residing in his elder son’s residence in mysore and request him to give me the horosope of his second son who is an offficer directly selected by UPSC.
I took the address and went to the house when I came to Mysore . The house was an independent spacious house located in the campus of a Central Government intitution. His first son was employed as a scientist and was occupying a good post in the institution.
I was received by the father who was in the house with enthusiasam. I told him the reason for my visit and asked him to give me the horoscope of the second boy.
As luck would have it his seocnd son had come on a week’s leave to visit his parents and his elder brother and his family.
He called his second son who was inside the house. He came to me introduced himself.
He was working as a probationary officer in the Incometax office at Bombay. He was quite handsome, tall and good looking. I was impressed by his manners very much and I thought that he and the daughter of the senior officer will make a good pair.
He made detailed enquiries about the senior officer and I told him the name and also the ancestral village of the officer. The father was excited and told me that he knew the family very well. He also told me that he worked at the residence of the father in law of the senior engineer during his younger days and the father in law helped him a lot when he was in impecunious circumstances. He said that he will be very lucky to have realtionship with such a noble family!! He also informed me that even without the matching of horoscope and even without his son seeeing the girl he is prepared for the marriage of his son with the daughter of the senior engineer.!
I was given sweet and good coffee and was asked to convey his regards to the senior engineer and especially to the wife of the senior engineer.
The father not only gave me the horoscope of his second son but also a photograph of
the boy.
After my leave I returned to my work and I gave the horoscope and also the photograph of the boy.to the senior engineer. I also told him about what the father of the boy told me. I also told him about my assessment of the boy . The senior enigineer was very
happy and thanked me.
After a month or so I met the senior engineer and asked him about the progress made regarding the allliance..
With a sad face he told me that the alliance did not materialise due to the stubborn attitude of his wife.
The reason is as follows:
“The father in law of the senior engineer belonged to a land lord’s family and had large tract of land. In addition he was working as an officer in the revenue department during British regime. The father of the boy was working in the Grandfather’s house as a servant and also assitant to the cook. He was quite young and continued to workfor a long time. . He got married and for this the landlord gave him lot of gifts and also household articles for the use of the couple. Even though the landlord treated the boy well , he was not treated so by his children and grand children. He was not allowed to sit in their presence and was asked to polish the foot wear and also many works for which other servaants were available.. He never raised his voice and obeyed them. After some years he left the service and went to madras. Not much was known about him.
Now as per the customs among the ethnic minority to which the senior engineer belongs to, the mother of the bride cannot sit in front of the father of the bridegroom. She has to stand behind a half closed door and talk to him if at all she has to say anything. If she has to serve things or cross his path she has to cover her head and she should avoid looking at him. So a lady who used to order this gentleman when she was young could not even imagine the new role she has to play. So the alliance was not proceeded with.. No amount of pleading by her husabnd she could change her stand.”
After telling me this the senior engineer almost broke down.”
May be the marriages are made in heaven.
This happened about four decades back and may be the boy and the girl have found their own mates and living happily.
